Harold Lloyd plays Harold, the boy from the country who wants to make his fortune in the big city. The girl Mildred, whom he tries to impress with power and wealth, stays behind. Although life as a small salesman in a department store is hard work and progress is slow, the boy presents himself as a high-flyer in his letters home. However, the lie begins to totter when Mildred comes to town for a visit. Fearing exposure, Harold outgrows himself.
