Kolesnichenko received her first piano lessons at the age of seven. After completing her schooling at the special music schools for gifted children in Kharkov and Moscow, she continued her studies at the Hanover University of Music and Drama with Vladimir Krainev and Hatto Beyerle continued.

Elena Kolesnitschenko began her international career in 1990 at UNO concerts in New York and in the Pope's residence in the Vatican. She took part in the Salzburg Festival, the Verbier Festival, the Colmar International Festival and the Braunschweig Classix Festival. She has also played with the Russian National Orchestra, the chamber orchestra Moscow Virtuosi, the Filarmonica Banatul (Romania), Bonn Classical Philharmonic Orchestra and the Collegium Musicum Basel. There were also concerts at the Vienna Musikverein, in Palau de la Musica Barcelona, in Moscow Conservatory and in the Great Hall of the Cologne Philharmonic Hall. As a chamber musician she has worked with, among others Vladimir Spivakov, Vladimir Krainev, Dmitry Ashkenazy and Maxim Rysanov. Together with the German soprano Cecilia de Maizière, she forms a regular Lied duo.
